Bono

Profile of Region

Background

The Bono Region was created in 2019 as a result of the carving out of the Bono East and Ahafo Regions from the former Brong Ahafo Region. The Region has 11 administrative divisions with an estimated population of 2.4 million (2010 Census) of which approximately 48 % is rural. As at 2018, the overall potable water coverage for rural communities and small towns in the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regions was 66.11 %.
The Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) has a mandate to increase access to potable water in rural communities and small towns, as stipulated in the National Community Water and Sanitation Programme (NCWSP). In that regard, the Bono region under the erstwhile Brong-Ahafo Region have made a lot of strides in the facilitation and implementation of the NCWSP. From 1994, the Region has been a beneficiary of several water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) projects from its major development partners namely; the International Development Association (IDA), the European Union (EU) and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD). With their support funds, the Region benefited from the Community Water and Sanitation Project CWSP-1 (1994 – 1999), Community Water and Sanitation Project CWSP-II (2000 – 2005) and the Small Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Project (STWSSP). The then Brong-Ahafo Region also collaborated with CBRDP to complete the drilling of 556 boreholes under the CWSP-II/1.

Mandate

The Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) was established by a Parliamentary Act 564 in December 1998, with the mandate to facilitate the provision of safe drinking water and related sanitation services to Rural Communities and Small Towns in Ghana under the now defunct National Community Water and Sanitation Programme with the Community Ownership and Management (COM) model as a means of ensuring the sustainable supply. However, in 2017 the Agency embarked on Reforms to participate in the management of small town water supply systems due to the unsatisfactory performance of the COM model. As a result, the Region commenced its pilot participation in water systems management in 2018 with four (4) water systems namely; Akuma/Brahoho, Krobo, New Longoro, and Nkrankwanta. In 2019 four (4) more water systems were added to its management namely; Wenchi, Goaso, Kwame Danso and Mim. The Mim water system which was totally collapsed was given out on contract by the Agency  for rehabilitation and expected to be completed and commence operation by mid 2020. As at March 2020, the Bono Regional Office manages a total of thirteen (13) water systems. Out of these, five (5) systems were completed in 2019 under the AF-SRWSP, namely: Brosankro, Asiri, Jankufa, Dotobaa and Prang water systems.
