Profile of the Ashanti Region


Overview

The Ashanti Region is located in the middle portion of Ghana, approximately within longitudes 0.15O E and 2.25O W and latitudes 5.50O N and 7.46O S. It shares boundaries with Bono East Region to the North, Western Region to the West, Eastern Region to the East and Central Region to the South.

Administratively the Region is divided into Forty-three (43) Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs). These are one (1) Metropolis, Eighteen (18) Municipalities and Twenty-Four (24) Districts as indicated below. Thirty-six of the MMDAs are under the jurisdiction of CWSA Ashanti Region in terms of water service provision. Ashanti Region is the most populous Region in Ghana with a population of 4,780,380 (GSS, 2010 Population and Housing census) constituting 19.3% of the National population. At the end of the year 2019, the total population of the 36 MMDAs under CWSAs jurisdiction was 4,138,566 and out of this 58.09% had potable water services.

Regional Stakeholders

CWSA Ashanti Region has a number of stakeholders/collaborators, both Government and non-Government entities as well as Traditional Authorities.

Water Facilities and Coverage (as at end 2019)

The number of water facilities in the Region at the end of 2019 were as follows;

  • Small Town piped systems –           34
  • Limited mechanized systems –           219
  • Boreholess                         –           5,195
  • Hand dug wells                         –           247

These facilities serve 2,403,888 which represent about 58.09% of the total population of rural communities and Small towns in the Region. The District details are shown below;

Ongoing Activities in the Region

The following activities are ongoing in the Region

  • Installation of Iron Removal plants for the Akrokerri, Mankranso, Seniagya, Kwaso and Adugyama water systems.
  • Rehabilitation and expansion of the Seneagya water system in the Sekyere East District
  • Redevelopment of boreholes for small town systems being managed by CWSA
  • Rehabilitation of Pump houses
  • Transition arrangements to take over the management of Bekwai water sytem
  • Quarterly testing of water quality (physical, chemical and bacteriological) for the water systems
