The Four Hand Pumps Standardised In Ghana

NIRA AF-85

Description of handpump: The Nira AF-85 is a direct action pump with a sub- merged cylinder and light weight high-displacement pump rods. Water is lifted to the surface by the plunger assembly and the displacement of water is between the pump rod and the rising mains.

 

 

The above ground part of the pump, the pump head is made of steel and galvanised for protection against corrosion. The below ground component of the pump e.g. pump rod, rising main, piston, and foot valve are made of different durable plastic (polyethylene material).

 

Where can the handpump be installed? The NIRA AF-85 is most suitable for hand dug wells and boreholes with shallow water tables, with a minimum well diameter of 100 mm.

 

Installation depth: The recommended installation is maximum 16.5 meters. Installation to a depth more than 16.5 meters leads to heavy operation and too much stress on the pump.

 

Maintenance: In the booklet supplied by the Manufacturer, all aspects of maintenance needed to satisfy the manufacturer are described in detail. However, it is strongly recommended to do yearly preventive maintenance and inspection especially on all components, which feature a constant wear and abrasion. This is to be done by a trained and authorised area mechanic so as to ensure quality workmanship and a long life span of all parts and components of the hand pump.

 

AFRIDEV

Description of hand pump: The AFRIDEV is a medium to deep well reciprocating pump. Afridev HandpumpWater is lifted to the surface by the reciprocating action of the plunger assembly. The upper pump part is made of galvanised steel while the pump rod is made of stainless steel. All other underground components with the exception of the cylinder liner are made of durable plastics. This includes important parts like the bearings of the handle assembly. The PVC pipes are glued together by solvent cement.

 

Where can the hand pump be installed? The AFRIDEV is most suitable for bore- holes with medium to deep water tables with a minimum well diameter of 100 mm.

 

Installation depth: The recommended installation depth is from 16.5 meters to 30 meters. The stress on the plastic pipes in installations more than 30 meters is too high and can lead to frequent changes of broken plastic pipes.

 

Maintenance: In the booklet supplied by the Manufacturer, all aspects of maintenance needed to satisfy the manufacturer are described in detail. However, it is strongly recommended to do yearly preventive maintenance and inspection especially on all components which feature a constant wear and abrasion. This is to be done by a trained and authorised area mechanic so as to ensure quality workmanship and a long life span of all parts and components of the hand pump.

 

VERGNET Hydraulic command foot pump

Description of hand pump: The VERGNET pump is a hydraulic operated foot pump completely different from other (hand) pump designs. The operating principle is, by forcing water into an expandable bag (baudruche) within a closed and valve operated stain- less steel cylinder. The expandable bag increases in size and forces the water out into the discharge hose. By releasing the force on the pedal, the expandable bag contracts again and sucks water into the cylinder. The discharge hose and the command hose are of polyethylene material and connected by brass joints.

 

Installation depth: The recommenced installation is up to a depth of 70 meters from the dynamic water level.

 

Where can the hand pump be installed? This can be installed in deep machine drilled boreholes with a minimum well diameter of 100 mm. The well where a VERGNET pump is installed has to be basically sand free because the accumulation of sand or silt particles in the expandable bag will eventually break it.

 

Maintenance: In the booklet supplied by the Manufacturer, all aspects of maintenance needed to satisfy the manufacturer are described in detail. However, it is strongly recommended to do yearly preventive maintenance and inspection especially on all components which feature a constant wear and abrasion. This is to be undertaken by a trained and authorised area mechanic so as to ensure quality workmanship and a long life span of all parts and components of the foot pump.

 

INDIA MKII MODIFIED

Description of hand pump: The modified India Mark 11 is a medium to deep well reciprocating pump. Water is lifted to the surface by the reciprocating action of the plunger assembly.

 

The upper pump part is made of galvanised steel. The pump rod and the rising pipes are of stainless steel. The pipes are connected by a rope thread. The pump rod is guided against reciprocating actions. The cylinder is made of brass (optional stainless steel). The bearings of the handle assembly are heavy duty flange bearings.

 

Where can the hand pump be installed? The hand pump is suitable for hand dug wells and machine drilled boreholes with a minimum well diameter of 100 mm.

 

Installation depth: The recommended installation depth with a 2.5 " Cylinder is 16.5 meters to 50 Meters. With the use of a smaller cylinder e.g. 2”, it can be installed up to 70 meters from the dynamic water level.

 

Maintenance: In the booklet designed by IGIP Consulting Engineers, all aspects of maintenance needed to satisfy the various manufacturers are described in detail. However, it is strongly recommended to do yearly preventive maintenance and inspection especially on all components which feature a constant wear and abrasion. This is to be done by a trained and authorised area mechanic so as to ensure quality workmanship and a long life span of all parts and components of the hand pump.
