A global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diarrheal diseases and respiratory infections. An important element of ensuring the provision of sustainable water services is having a robust and comprehensive monitoring system that provides continuous reliable data required for remedial, corrective action and strategic planning. Effective monitoring of the functionality and service levels of rural water and sanitation facilities is key to sustainable delivery of water and sanitation to beneficiary communities.

COUNTDOWN - 2014 GLOBAL HANDWASHING DAY

Good Afternoon, 15th October is Global Handwashing Day (GHD). A global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diarrheal diseases and respiratory infections. As we prepare towards the commemoration of GHD good hand hygiene should be your top priority:

 

•Did you know that Ghana has recorded 18,902 cholera cases and 150 deaths in 9 regions as at 26th September 2014)?  This is a wakeup call that washing the hands with soap should indeed be a daily practice;

Hygiene Promotion

Hygiene education is an important component of water and sanitation projects as it maximizes the potential benefits of improved water supply and sanitation facilities. Lt also helps users to appreciate the need for their proper operation and maintenance and creates a willingness to contribute to their costs. Lt is not just sufficient to construct improved water supply and sanitation facilities.


New facilities must be used continuously by everybody and in a safe way. To maximize potential benefits water supply and sanitation projects, technical and behavioral changes must go hand in hand. CWSA approach to hygiene promotion is simply a process which aims at promoting conditions and practices that help to prevent water and sanitation related diseases.

 

The focal areas of hygiene promotion include:

 

DISPOSAL OF FAECAL MATTER

  1. Proper Disposal of Farces
  2. Promotion and Construction of Latrines
  3. Proper use and maintenance of Latrines
  4. Proper Hygiene after defecation/Hygiene practices
  5. Farces related diseases

 

Hand Washing CampaginHAND WASHING AND FOOD HANDLING

Hand Washing with Soap and water at critical times

  1. After the use of toilet
  2. After cleaning a baby
  3. Before handling food

 

SAFE WATER

  1. Sources of safe water
  2. Sources of unsafe water
  3. Keeping sources of water clean and safe
  4. Keeping water safe during transportation from the source to home
  5. Keeping water safe at home
  6. Proper use of water and maintenance of Water facilities

 

WATER-BORNE, WATER RELATED AND EXCRETARELATED DISEASES
